PM Modi: Lockdown Has Gone But Virus Is Still Here

The Prime Minister in his eighth address to the nation since March talked about the need to follow precautionary measures at the time when the country is slowly opening up as the lockdown eases.

In his address, PM Modi said the battle against Covid has not yet ended and till the vaccine is developed, he advised that the people need to adhere to measures like social distancing, wearing masks and regularly sanitize and wash hands.

“In this festive season, markets are bright again but we need to remember that the lockdown might have ended but Covid-19 still persists. With efforts of every Indian over last 7–8 months, India is in a stable situation we must not let it deteriorate,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

He added, “Several versions of vaccines are being worked upon in India as well. Some of them are at advanced stage. The government is also working to prepare the nation to ensure that the vaccine reaches every India as soon as possible.”

India on Tuesday reported less than 50,000 new cases for the first time in nearly three months. With 46,790 new cases reported across the country, the coronavirus infection has now affected close to 7.6 million people in India. As many as 587 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 1,15,197.

PM Modi said that “A committee of scientists appointed by the government recently said that coronavirus in India may have already peaked and infection will likely “run its course” by February 2021.”
