NEET Reservation Row: Tamil Nadu Passes Govt Order for 7.5% Quota in Admissions

Tamil Nadu Government has passed a Government Order (GO) to provide a 7.5 percent reservation in medical colleges for students who have studied from government-run schools and have also cleared the NEET examination.
On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu government issued a GO on the immediate implementation of a 7.5 percent horizontal reservation for NEET-qualified Government school students in medical colleges.
They have been demanding the implementation of reservations from this academic year itself. The order has been issued despite Governor Banwarilal Purohit demanding some time to review the bill.
Earlier, DMK treasurer TR Baalu appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to give his assent to the reservation Bill. He in his letter requested to hasten the nod as the counseling dates for medical colleges have already been announced and the delay will affect the medical aspirants from government schools to reserve seats for medical courses.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly, on Sept 15, unanimously passed a bill to provide 7.5 percent horizontal quota in medical admission for government school students. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswami expressed his confidence in the governor saying that he will soon be approving the bill.
On the other hand, the opposition party DMK leader MK Stalin has promised the poll-bound Tamil Nadu population that his government will stop the NEET examination in the state, if they come to power.
