Muhurat Trading: An Auspicious Time for New Investors

Diwali, a festival of new beginnings that marks an auspicious time for all, has a special meaning for stock traders and investors. Every year stock exchanges BSE, NSE hold a special trading session on Diwali called Muhurat Trading.

Now Muhurat trading as the name suggests is a one-hour session which is considered auspicious and marks the beginning of Hindu Accounting year or Samvat. According to the Hindu calendar, the current year is Samvat 2077. The Muhurat or auspicious time is especially celebrated by two big business communities in the country, the Marwaris and Sindhis (Gujarat) who start the Muhurat Session with worshipping account books and chests of cash and jewels.

This year the special live trading session will be held from 6.15 pm to 7.15 pm on November 14, 2020. The schedule for the session will have a Block Deal Session from 5.45 pm to 6 pm, Pre-Open will be from 6 pm to 6.08 pm, the Normal Market will open from 6.15 pm to 7.15 pm. Also, the Periodic call auction will start from 6.20 pm to 7.05 pm and the closing session will happen between 7.15 pm to 7.30 pm. The trade modification cut-off time is 7.45 pm.

Asia’s oldest stock exchange BSE has been holding Muhurat trading since 1957 while NSE started this traditional trading in 1992. The trading communities on this day buy small quantities of shares and believe that trading will bring prosperity and wealth throughout the current Samvat.
