India Corruption Survey: 51% of Indians Admit To Paying Bribe in Past 1 Year

About 51 percent of the citizens who participated in a survey, admitted to paying a bribe in 2019. The number stood at 56 percent in 2018. Some progress but a lot more needed.

About 51 percent of citizens have admitted to having paid a bribe in the last 12 months according to the India Corruption Survey 2019.

According to the survey, the percentage of citizens who paid a bribe this year has come down to 51 percent compared to 56 percent last year. This number stood at 45 percent in the year 2017.

The survey was conducted LocalCircles in collaboration with Transparency International India that concluded ‘India Corruption Survey 2019’ to ascertain the level of domestic corruption in the country and gather citizen pulse on corruption.

This survey was conducted for the third year in a row and has been compiled in this comprehensive report. Over 190,000 responses were received from over 81,000 unique citizens.

According to the survey, property registration, police, municipality and transport are the top departments where bribes are demanded.

India’s ranking in the Corruption Perception Index 2018 released by Transparency International, showed that the country’s position has improved 3 places compared to last year and now stand at 78th position out of 180 countries.
