Heavy Rainfall in Isolated Places Expected as Nivar Weakens Into Severe Cyclonic Storm

Cyclone Nivar has made landfall near Puducherry in the early hours of Thursday and has begun weakening. But the storm is expected to bring heavy rains to the union territory area and adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu.
Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places like Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Trirupattur, Vellore District of Tamil Nadu and Chittoor, Kurnool, Praksam; Cuddappa districts of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southeast areas of Telangana.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the severe cyclonic storm Nivar will move northwestwards and weaken further into a cyclonic storm during the next three hours.

Two people have lost their lives due to Nivar storm in Tamil Nadu so far. One lost his life after a building collapsed due to the storm and another died due to a tree fall in Tamil Nadu, sources said.

The state department said that there is no “major” damage reported due to Cyclone Nivar till now. The government compiling reports from districts. Officials are on the ground to check the impact of the Nivar Storm, it added.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry authorities have taken a slew of measures to handle the situation on the ground as Nivar has led to heavy rainfall in many areas. The Coastal regions like Nagapatnam have received 63 mm, Karaikal received 96 mm, Cuddalore 270 mm, Puducherry 300 mm and Chennai has got 113 mm of rainfall between 25 Nov (8:30 am) to 26 Nov (6:30 am), according to IMD bulletin.
