It tweeted “Remembering MAK Pataudi — former India captain and one of the bravest batsmen to have ever played the game — on his 80th birth anniversary.”

Pataudi was considered as a prodigy at Winchester, the team he captained in 1959.

In the same season, he scored 1,068 runs thus beating the previous record set by Douglas Jardine in 1919.

He was also the first Indian to captain the Oxford team while he was studying at the university.

However, he lost one eye in a car accident and it was feared that his cricketing career would be over.

But his determination helped, and he made his debut for India in 1961 and scored his first century in the Madras Test.

In 1962, he was appointed the vice-captain for the West Indies tour and was made stand-in captain in the same series.

He was the youngest captain ever of an international team, a record which was broken by Tatenda Taibu in 2004.

He still remains the youngest player to captain India in an international match.

Pataudi played 46 Tests and scored 2793 runs with six centuries and one double-centuries.

The batsman was also the recipient of the 1968 Wisden Cricketer of the Year.

His father Mohammad Iftikhar Ali Khan Siddiqui Pataudi was also a cricketer and was part of the infamous Bodyline series.
