Baby Elephant Sreekutty Celebrates First Birthday in Kerala

Kerala: It was a special treat for Sreekutty, an adorable Female elephant calf who just turned a year old on November 8, in Thiruvananthapuram.

The elephant calf celebrated her first birthday by cutting a special cake made up of jaggery, pineapple and Sugarcane. The celebrations were not just special for the baby elephant but also for Kappukadu elephant rehabilitation centre, whose efforts saved this baby elephant.

Sreekutty, as she is lovingly called, was found in a weak condition when she was just a month old near Thenmala in Kollam district in 2019. According to her saviours in Kappukadu, she was first found covered with deep wounds and bruises when she was rescued by the rehabilitation centre.

Survival of such young elephant calves are slim, without parents and forest cover, Kappukadu elephant rehabilitation centre has been working tirelessly for the past year, to keep her safe and healthy.

On November 8, Sreekutty celebrated her birthday, which coincides with the same day she was rescued a year back, by cutting her special cake.

Secretary of the forest department, Rajesh Kumar Sinha was also present on the occasion as the special guest at the centre. He celebrated her birthday and gifted Sreekutty a traditional shawl as a present.

Tourists present at the Kappukadu elephant rehabilitation centre were pleasantly surprised and joined in the celebrations with enthusiasm.
