60th Goa Liberation Day observed In Naval Area in Vasco

A wreath-laying ceremony was organised at the naval base, INS Gomantak, at Vasco in South Goa on Saturday on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Goa.
A ceremonial guard of honour was given to the soldiers who had lost their lives in Operation Vijay(name of the operation for the annexation of Goa) and a two-minute silence was observed.
A 60 km bicycle ride was also held with cycle enthusiasts participating from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, ex-servicemen, and the local population.
President Ramnath Kovind is also on a two-day visit to the state on the occasion and was welcomed by the governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet said “On the special occasion of Goa Liberation Day, greetings and best wishes to my sisters and brothers of Goa. We recall with pride the bravery of those who worked hard to free Goa. Praying for the continuous progress of the state in the years to come”.
CM Swant hoisted the flag on the occasion at Campal, Panaji.
Goa was amalgamated into India after India had launched an offensive to take back the territory of Goa, Daman & Diu from the Portuguese occupation which lasted from January 17 to January 19, 1961.
